To configure Symantec Backup Exec 2010 VMware agents is straight forward if you know the steps. The whitepaper Symantec publishes is still for the old version and uses vcb. For the current version you need VMware vSphere license with data protection.

1. On the backup server configure Windows so that it doesn't auto mount new disk. This is really important so Windows won't corrupt the vmfs filesystem. Start a command prompt and type diskpart. When diskpart is started give the commands automount disable and automount scrub.
2. Configure on your SAN that the backup server has access to the lun's containing the vmfs volumes.
3. Configure in Backup Exec a new backup job. In the selection list select the vm's in the VMware section. You don't need to install Backup Exec Agents unless it's an Exchange server or SQL server if you have licenses for those agents. The first time you have to enter you vCenter location.

That's it. So the backup server needs access to the vCenter and the lun's containing the vmfs volumes.
